Alkylbenzene Oil

Alkylbenzene oil

Alkylbenzene oil

Alkylbenzene (AB) – is a synthetic oil suitable for refrigeration systems using CFC or HCFC refrigerants. It is compatible with mineral oil and compared to mineral oil, it has improved refrigerant miscibility with R-22 at low-temperature conditions.

Will 134a work with alkylbenzene oil?

R-134a is a single component refrigerant rated A1 by ASHRAE (lowest levels of toxicity and flammability), having zero ozone depletion potential. POE or PAG (polyalkylene glycol, auto only) lubricants must be used with R-134a since it is not miscible with mineral oil or alkylbenzene lubricants found in many systems.

What is refrigerant oil used for?

Where the refrigerant is essential for the cooling properties of a refrigeration system, the refrigeration oil is crucial for the correct functioning of the compressor. Lubricants for refrigeration compressors reduce friction, prevent wear and act as a seal between the high and low pressure sides.

Can you use POE oil in an R-22 system?

The refrigerant R-22 is compatible with POE oils.

Can you mix POE and PAG oil?

POE/ESTER OIL Because mineral oil and PAG oil cannot be mixed, another A/C compressor oil was needed to bridge the gap for system conversions. The transitional solution was polyol ester oil (“ester” oil or POE). Ester oil is often called “retrofit oil” because it mixes with both R-12 and R-134a.

Can I mix mineral oil and POE oil in a system?

Can I mix Polyol Ester (POE) and Mineral Oil (MO) together? When using CFC or HCHC refrigerants, POE and MO can be mixed. The exception is R12 that only uses MO or Alkyl Benzene Mineral Oil (ABMO) blend. HFC refrigerants can only use POE oil.

What oil can sometimes be used with R134a?

PAG oil: Polyalkylene Glycol or PAG oil is a man-made lubricant used in both R134a systems and the latest R1234yf. There are several types of PAG oil based on the viscosity of the oil -- PAG46, PAG100 and PAG150 -- and the type of refrigerant it is designed for.

What oil is compatible with 134a refrigerant?

The best type of oil for R134A system is polyolester oil (POE). Alternatively, you can also use polyalpha olefin (PAO). It is essential that you don't use mineral oil, PAG oil, or ABK oil with R134A refrigerant. Mineral oil is less hygroscopic than POE oil, for example.

What oil do I use for 134a conversion?

R-134a systems require PAG (polyalkylene glycol) oil of a certain grade. PAG oil is hygroscopic, meaning that it readily absorbs moisture from the air. Never leave the cap loose when storing PAG refrigerant oil. Some manufacturers recommend using less hygroscopic POE (Polyol Ester) oil instead of PAG after a retrofit.

Do I need to add refrigerant oil?

The best way to ensure the long life of your AC compressor is to ensure that you add adequate oil any time you add refrigerant to your system.

How long does refrigerant oil last?

In fact, it should remain intact for the lifetime of your air conditioning system. Unlike oil or gas, refrigerant is not a consumable element that needs to be replaced over time. But there is one thing that can cause your AC to run low on refrigerant–a leak.

What is the most common refrigerant oil used today?

Polyolester (POE) – The most common oil utilized in refrigeration and air conditioning systems using HFC/HFO refrigerants. It is also suitable for systems using CFC or HCFC refrigerants.

What can you mix with R22?

The most commonly mixed refrigerants in the field are the replacements for R-22 — R-427A, R-438A, R-422D, and R-407C — which are often combined with the remaining R-22 in the system, said Maiorana.

What oil is in R22?

R22 air conditioners use mineral oil and R410A systems use synthetic oil. The synthetic oil is generally more soluble with R410A than mineral oil is with R22.

Are all POE oils the same?

Are all POE refrigerant oils the same? No. Oils vary in viscosity, formulation, etc. and are designed for different applications in different compressors.

What is the biggest concern with POE oil?

One major concern with POE oils is that they are hygroscopic. If they remain in contact with air, they have the ability to absorb its moisture. For a technician, this means that when a repair requires opening a system, it should only be left exposed to the atmosphere for as long as necessary to complete the repair.

What happens if you add too much PAG oil?

If you've added more oil than recommended to the system, it could pool in a couple of places in the system besides coating condenser coils and the evaporator's inner walls. The net effect is a diminished ability to absorb/dissipate heat and you'll experience a downturn in the system's overall cooling performance.

Why should PAG oil not be exposed to air?

The disadvantage of PAG oils is that they are hygroscopic, which means that they absorb and bind moisture from the ambient air. If the moisture content in the air conditioning system is too high, this can contribute to the formation of acids and corrosion, resulting in damage to components and leaks.

What temperature does POE oil break down?

It is a known fact that most oil may start to break down and vaporize at 350 degrees.

What should you not take with mineral oil?

Mineral oil should not be taken within two hours of taking a stool softener (see Colace) because the stool softener may increase the amount of mineral oil that is absorbed by the body.
